Understanding and Preparing for Wildfire in the Wildland-Urban Interface

contributed by
Carol J. Dollard, P.E., LEED AP
Energy Engineer (and volunteer fire fighter)
Colorado State University

Fire has historically played a fundamental ecological role in many of America’s wildland areas. However, the rising number of homes in the wildland-urban interface (WUI), associated impacts on lives and property from wildfire, and escalating costs of wildfire management have led to an urgent need for communities to become “fire-adapted.”

Golden corydalis

Director Program in Environment and Natural Resources
University of Wyoming

Looks like this plant (really really flowering
everywhere now in our HIgh Park area) is known to
spread rapidly after a fire and then die out after
a few years! Not a weed problem. Maybe it helps, even,
with the soil retention…

.

Golden corydalis quickly invades recently burned
areas by seed. However, its survival in the postfire
community appears to be very short lived.

Golden corydalis invaded recently burned areas by
wind-dispersed seed after stand-replacing summer
fire in lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) stands in
Colorado. It was not present in adjacent unburned
stands, but in burned areas it had a frequency
of 27.9 percent in the first postfire year. By the
second postfire year, frequency had diminished to
9.7 percent, and it was thereafter eliminated from
the postfire community

House and Senate Ag Committees Pass Farm Bill

Contributed by

From the Family Forest Action Network

Late last night the House Agriculture Committee passed their Farm Bill, just one day after the Senate Agriculture Committee passed their bill out of committee. Provisions in both bills include huge wins for forest owners. Many of our forest priorities were included in both versions of the Farm Bill (see  how the House and Senate versions may differ )

If you would like to support this bill, tell Congress.
